What Is a Chemical Peel?
Chemical peels are non-surgical treatments that involve applying specific chemical mixtures to the skin’s surface. The chemicals in your peel will be customized to address your specific needs and goals.
Peels use acids to cause gradual peeling of dead and damaged skin cells. This process triggers the body’s natural healing process, causing new skin cells to form in the treated areas. These skin cells will be smooth and free of any damage. As a result, the targeted region will look more youthful and revitalized.
Light Peels
Light, or superficial, chemical peels are designed to gently remove skin cells from the outer layer of the skin (the epidermis). These peels are an excellent choice for people with sensitive skin or those new to chemical peels.
Light peels address shallow skin issues such as fine lines, uneven complexion, acne, and dryness. They typically contain milder chemicals such as maleic acid, lactic acid, glycolic acid, salicylic acid, and other alpha-hydroxy acids and beta-hydroxy acids.
Medium Peels
Medium-depth chemical peels penetrate beyond the epidermis into the papillary layer (the superficial layer of the dermis), achieving enhanced rejuvenation. These peels are excellent for acne scars, moderate wrinkles, and skin discoloration. Medium peels typically contain glycolic acid and trichloroacetic acid.
Deep Peels
Deep chemical peels penetrate to the lower dermal layer, effectively peeling away dead and damaged skin cells. This allows for the treatment of severe skin issues such as deep wrinkles, scars, certain growths, and sun damage.
Deep peels are composed of carbolic acid (phenol), a chemical capable of creating a controlled second-degree burn. It’s best to avoid this peel if you have a darker skin tone, since phenol can cause skin discoloration.
